The WOP will assist PD PAL Banjarmasin to improve its current fecal sludge management and expand sanitation services. Banjarmasin is the capital city of South Kalimantan, Indonesia is known as the "River City" given its mainly flat wetland area. It has a population of over 700,300 and covers 98,46km2. Wastewater service coverage is quite low and a great majority of the population still use septic tanks which are mostly non-standard types and not well maintained. The WOP will review current operational procedures and develop new SOPs for more effective delivery of services. It will also result in the development of a desludging schedule for septic tanks and a structured awareness
program for stakeholders and provide a long-term plan for Kota Banjarmasin to achieve its sanitation strategy objectives and targets to reduce pollution in river systems. A review of current capacities of staff will also be made which will be the basis of the training programs that will be developed.
