Summary

This session will present a new initiative titled “Digitalization of the Water and Sanitation Sector in the Global South” supported by GWOPA and the European Space Agency (ESA) through its Business Application Space Solutions (BASS) programme. The initiative focuses on deploying (pre)operational services that exploit space-based and other terrestrial technologies to digitalize the operations of water and sanitation operators in the Global South. The event will showcase how digital technologies can enhance utilities' capabilities in addressing non-revenue water, leak detection, water quality monitoring, and environmental protection. The event will showcase services developed by European companies-supported by BASS- exploiting space and terrestrial based technologies aimed at improve water sustainability and resilience, water quality monitoring, ground movement tracking, and based predictive maintenance tools. The session will engage water and sanitation operators to elicit interest in these solutions and gather operational use cases. It will also describe the process for the operators to validate innovative solutions in their operational scenario. This session highlights a unique opportunity to foster strategic partnerships, promote innovation, and scale sustainable, digital solutions that address real-world utility challenges in the Global South.

Objectives

• Raise awareness of space-enabled services that support the digitalization of water and sanitation operations. • Introduce water sustainability and resilience solutions developed through ESA’s BASS programme. • Facilitate direct exchanges between utilities in the Global South and European service providers on (pre)operational services • Support defining operational use cases and demonstration projects in WOP contexts. • Contribute to improving operational efficiency and strengthening resilience to climate-related risks for water and sanitation utilities
