The Role of WoP Platforms in Scaling Up and Institutionalizing WoPs
Summary
WOPs and S/WOPs are helping utilities improve performance and expand services. This session will explore how well-structured, results-driven partnerships address operational challenges and serve as powerful instruments that require integration into local government WASH initiatives.
Four case studies will be featured:
- Indah Water Konsortium (IWK), Malaysia and Perumda PALD Banjarmasin, Indonesia
- Società Metropolitana Acque Torino S.p.A. (SMAT) and Odisha Water Supply and Sewerage Board (OWSSB), India
- WOP Colombia
- Ethiopian WOP
Each speaker will present key outcomes, discuss the benefits of their partnerships, and highlight how WOP platforms are supporting these initiatives. This will be followed by an open Q&A session with participants.
These partnerships demonstrate how WOPs can foster local ownership, knowledge sharing, and long-term improvements in utility management. Beyond technical results, a panel discussion after the presentations will explore how WOPs are being institutionalized, moving from short-term interventions to becoming a part of national and local development strategies. Panelists from regional and national platforms (CariWOP, WOP-LAC, AfWASA, PERPAMSI) will provide further insights on how partnership experiences are shaping policies and guiding investment decisions.
By linking operational success with policy and planning processes, the session will position WOPs as a strategic tool for strengthening public utilities and advancing sustainable urban development.
Objectives
Key objectives of this session are:
1) Showcase concrete results from successful and impactful WOPs that have improved utility performance, service delivery, and operational capacity
2) Explore the role of national and regional platforms in supporting the institutionalization, scaling, and financing of WOPs
3) Foster cross-regional dialogue among practitioners and institutional partners on how to embed WOPs into long-term planning, investment, and planning processes
