Summary

The training will take the form of a workshop to facilitate exchange of ideas/experiences and learnings on technical and economic NRW strategies and approaches across Europe, Asia and Africa. Three case studies from these regions will be presented by utilities highlighting the economic and technical aspects of NRW management where speakers will share their experience and knowledge, their approaches , the benefits, success factors as well as challenges in undertaking the same within their respective utilities. After the presentations, the participants will be divided into groups (depending on the number of the applicants, at least 3-5) to discuss the presentations made and answer the following questions: - What are your current NRW levels? Do you have a NRW management program in place? - What are the biggest challenges to reducing NRW in your respective utilities: lack of knowledge? lack of financial resources? Both? - Based on the presentations, what of the NRW strategies can work for your utility? The results of the workshop will be presented in a plenary (sharing part), encouraging the participants to provide comments, further suggestions and recommendations; the moderator will then synthesize the results and summarize the same to serve as the take aways from the training.

Objectives

The reduction of NRW is an outcome in the framework of water resources conservation in times of climate change around the world. NRW reduction strategy is an important and “common” element for achieving the environmental and economic sustainability of a Water Utility, and it involves technical, economic/financial, and organizational features, which are translated in conception, planning, and implementation activities. Key objectives of this training session are: • Share the technical, economic, and management techniques of NRW Reduction implemented in different regions and the leverage for their effectiveness. • Compare with different countries' examples and implement mutual learning in the work groups and debate of the session. • Identify some possible new tools, techniques, and methodologies in the different fields of NRW management to update the current implementation of NRW reduction strategies.
