Measuring Wop impact, examples from Modjo (Ethiopia), Semarang (Indonesia), Nakuru (Kenya), and Ulaanbaatar (Mongolia)
Summary
Measuring the impact of a WOP in a utility can be a challenge. In this session we would like to highlight two different ways of measuring impact within WOPs, with examples from utilities.
The first method is through key performance indicators in combination with process maturity levels according the ‘Utilities of the Future’ approach developed by World Bank,. We would like to share 3 examples of improved utility performance through case studies of WOPs of VEI with utilities from Modjo (Ethiopia), Semarang (Indonesia), and Nakuru (Kenya).
The second method we would like to highlight for measuring the impact of a WOP is through AquaRating (AR). AR is an international standard and performance assessment developed for utilities by the Inter-American Development Bank in partnership with the International Water Association. For this method we would like to show a WOP case study from Ulaanbataar (Mongolia).
We would like to conclude the session by having a panel discussion with the 4 utilities on the different methods used for measuring impact and the advantages and disadvantages of each.
Objectives
The session aims to:
- Demonstrate the tangible impact of Water Operator Partnerships (WOPs) on utility performance.
- Share practical experiences and lessons learned from four diverse WOPs in Ethiopia, Indonesia, Mongolia and Kenya.
- Discuss advantages and disadvantages of different methods of measuring impact in WOPs
- Inspire other utilities and stakeholders to engage in peer-to-peer learning and capacity development.
