Describe WOPs activities
On December 10-11, 2009, the Penang Water Supply Corporation of Malaysia hosted a 6-person team from PDAM Tirta Musi Palembang including its managing director, to share strategies for achieving continuous water supplies. During the visit the two partners discussed detailed steps in their joint work plan for the next 6 months to implement 24-hour water services in a pilot area of Palembang. As side activity Palembang fully sponsored an additional 20 operational staff to travel for training on key practices to improve water treatment. At the conclusion of the visit the two water operators and ECO-Asia signed a Memorandum of Understanding to clarify the roles and responsibilities of each party for the duration of the twinning. From January 18-22, 2009, three experts from Penang Water Supply Corporation visited PDAM Tirta Music Kota Palembang to support Palembang Water Supply Company’s efforts to deliver continuous water supply to its customers. Palembang’s intermittent water supply, averaging around 12-hours per day, increases public health risks and lowers operational efficiencies. About 45 operational staff attended the training on applying geographic information systems (GIS) for the piped network and on understanding the key causes of water losses. Following training, the water operators developed an action plan to sustain full, 24-hour water services in a pilot area near Pal and to scale-up improvements in six service districts of the city.
