Project description
The aim of this partnership was to rehabilitate and improve the whole wastewater stabilization pond system in Maule
Project main objectives
The overall objective of this partnership was to rehabilitate and improve the whole wastewater stabilization pond system in Maule by implementing innovative technologies in the field of low-cost ecological sanitation, taking into consideration the whole integrated water cycle. The WOP focused on non-conventional technologies for wastewater treatment.
CINARA mentored FESAN and built their capacity in assessing various eco-sanitation alternatives and recommending the most viable technical solution for withstanding vulnerability to earthquakes. The WOP consisted of (a) assessing the damages caused by the quake, and (b) designing an action plan for system rehabilitation with appropriate low cost eco-sanitation solutions.

Second Phase – Technical Design: Following the first phase WOP, the Government of Chile allocated 30,000 USD for a second phase WOP – in which FESAN became the mentor and Maule Cooperative Sanitation Operator became the mentee – to develop a final technical design to reconstruct its sanitation facilities with non-conventional technological solutions. This phase is still ongoing, expected to end in August 2012.
Third Phase – Implementation of rehabilitation plan: The Government of Chile already pledged to finance the rehabilitation of the sanitation system of Maule up to total amount of 200,000 USD for construction and rehabilitation works.
