Project description
This WOP offer technical and management assistance for the drinking water infrastructure in Mozambique.
Project main objectives
The project objectives are to assist through FIPAG, the transition towards establishment of autonomous regional water companies in North, Central, South and Maputo regions, that can provide safe reliable water services to the customers, at affordable rates in a financially sustainable way. In addition, it aims to assist FIPAG in attracting (private) funding to invest in the extension of these services to provide access to drinking water for 70% of the population by 2015.
More specific objectives are the following:
1) Better management through educated, trained and skilled staff.
2) Autonomous water companies providing sustainable services.
3) Efficient use of water and affordable prices that cover the operational costs and make best use of assets and capital investment.
4) A wider coverage of and accessibility of continuous drinking water services while providing proper water quality.
5) Awareness of the relationship between hygiene and drinking water consumption (public health).
6) Better social and economic conditions for women and children, through reduced distances to standpipes and improved water quality.
7) Water charges that cover the cost of management and maintenance.
