As part of Water Pavilion, which brings together over 60 organizations to unify and amplify the voice of the international water community, GWOPA advocates the WOP and SWOP approaches to adaptation and building resilience.

Given the upcoming revision of the NDCs, the session will focus on identifying persisting challenges, but also key entry points and opportunities for multi-level governance and for leveraging, mainstreaming and upscaling the urban water content into national climate planning and policies to support the implementation of local urban water resilience solutions.

14 November : Towards climate-neutral, inclusive urban water and sanitation

16:00 - 17:00 | Multilevel Actions and Urbanization Pavilion

The UN-Habitat's Multilevel Action & Urbanization Pavilion serves as the global stage for the city and region climate agenda during COP29. The Pavilion will bring into focus not only the challenges and needs but also the accomplishments and commitments of local and subnational actors to climate action.

This session will focus on how emissions from the water and wastewater sectors can be included in national GHG inventories, and capacity development needs for water and sanitation utilities and how mitigation actions within this sector can be leveraged for utilities to unlock climate financing to improve urban water and sanitation infrastructure and services, and support the achievement of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

The session, jointly organized with GIZ,  World Waternet and GWOPA/UN-Habaitat, will also demonstrate the role of the Sanitation and Water Operators' Partnership (S/WOP) in enhancing capacity building for utilities to transition to carbon neutrality.
